About the work
FUMAGE
Fumage is the use of smoke to create art. First used by the Surrealists in the 30's, the method involves capturing smoke on paper, then removing it with scratchers and erasers to make images. The effect is otherworldly and ethereal.
Fumage is extraordinarily delicate. Anything that touches the surface leaves a permanent mark. Even a moth landing on the drawing will leave a trace. The medium demands extreme care when working, handling, storing, and framing, but the effect is like no other and I love working with it.
The Goddess
The Egyptians believed that every deity was an expression of the Transcendent Creator. First mentioned in the Pyramid Texts around 2400 BCE, the goddess Isis was eventually carried throughout the Greco-Roman world and became the Myrionymous- Goddess of 10,000 Names.
One of these names is "Panthea" because all goddesses were considered to be aspects of her, and my work explores these countless expressions. Another name is "First Among the Muses" and she has been my muse for many years.
